How it works
KidPlayMoney is a shared scoreboard for the allowance you already give. Here is the whole flow, start to finish.
1. A grownup creates the family
Sign up with your email or Google account. You are the only person in the family with a real password. Give your family a name and you are in.
2. Add each kid
Pick a name, an avatar and a color for each child. Then choose their money rules:
- Allowance: an amount, and whether it lands weekly, every other week or monthly, and on which day.
- Interest: a yearly rate (try something big like 12% so they actually notice), paid daily by default so kids can watch a live countdown to their next penny, or weekly / monthly as one rounded payment, with an optional cap.
- Chores: off, all-or-nothing (finish every required chore to get allowance), extra-credit only (chores pay bonus money), or both.
- Investing: on or off. When on, kids can buy and sell pretend shares in real companies.
3. Kids sign in without passwords
Two ways, both designed for small kids:
- Magic link: every kid gets their own link (and QR code) in your settings. Open it once on their tablet or phone and they stay signed in.
- Grownup email + PIN: kids type your email and a 4-digit family PIN you set, then tap their name.
Siblings can switch between each other from the kid screen. There is intentionally no serious security on the kid side, because there is no real money to protect.
4. Money moves automatically
Every morning KidPlayMoney checks whether anyone is due an allowance or interest payment and posts it to their account with a note. Daily interest also lands the moment a kid opens the app, so the penny drops while they watch. If chores are all-or-nothing and a required chore was missed, the allowance is skipped and both of you can see why.
5. Chores, approvals and bonuses
Kids tap a chore to mark it done. You get a pending approval and tap once to approve (or reject). Extra chores pay their reward the moment you approve. You can also turn on auto-approve if you trust the system.
6. Investing with training wheels
Kids browse a curated list of companies they know, or search for any US stock or fund, then buy in dollar amounts (minimum $1) using their cash. Prices come from public market data and are delayed. Their portfolio value updates as prices move, so gains and losses are real lessons with pretend money.
7. You stay in charge
Add or remove money any time with a note (birthday money, that toy they bought at the store). Change rules whenever you like. Regenerate a kid's magic link. Delete a kid and everything with them.
